More than just scenery

Cumbria is, of course, not all about the scenery, and there is a wealth of things to do in the area around Crown Cottage. The famous Cartmel Races are only a few miles away, and there are many cultural events that draw people in, as well as those that quicken the pulse. Here are just some of our favourites.

Cartmel Races – Iconic horse racing venue with a unique layout, with visitors able to go into the centre of the racecourse right by the paddocks. Racing meets throughout the summer, along with other special events. A must-see.

Piel Island – Pay the boatman, ride out to The Ship Inn and meet the King of Piel Island. A historical quirk means that this small island has been sovereign territory since the Middle Ages. Explore the ruins, take in the views of the mountains and enjoy some excellent pub food on this remote island.

Via Ferrata – One for the adrenaline lovers, and not for those without a head for heights! Skilled instructors take you through the course, where you’ll test your limits on a series of ladders, cables and nets on the steep sides of beautiful Honister Pass. Unforgettable.

Kendal Mountain Film Festival – Billed as the ultimate gathering for those that love the outdoors, the Mountain Film Festival in the nearby town of Kendal is an institution. Every November, enthusiasts of mountaineering and exploration converge for a celebration of the sport and the adjacent artforms.

Lakes International Comic Arts Festival – Held every October in Kendal, the Comic Arts Fest attracts an international crowd of illustrators, artists and storytellers, and welcomes all kinds of stories and graphic art.

Westmorland County Show – Showcase of local produce and culture that demonstrates beautifully what the area has to offer, as well as competitions and shows. On the last weekend in May.

Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show – Outdoor festival featuring competitions, traditional sports, sheepdog trials and shows. 170 years of history and still going from strength to strength. Takes place at the end of August.

Wordsworth Grasmere – A new attraction celebrating the life and works of William Wordsworth, who eulogised the area and lived in the village. A must-see for literature buffs..

Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway – A preserved steam railway that passes right by Windermere. Authentic steam carriages bring you the atmosphere of a bygone age. One for rail enthusiasts, or simply those that like to watch the world go by at a leisurely pace.

Lakes Aquarium – Freshwater aquarium on the shores of Windermere, featuring much of the local wildlife. You can also catch a boat to cruise on the lake, as well as ride a steam train on the aforementioned Lakeside railway.

Hill Top – Beatrix Potter’s former residence and a must for fans of the books. A beautiful and traditional Lake District cottage, now managed by the National Trust.

Brockhole Visitor Centre – Outdoor activity centre and magnificent gardens on the shores of Windermere. A fantastic place to explore and an inspiring place to spend time by the lake.
